Philadelphia, PA (June 30, 2025) – Rawle & Henderson LLP proudly commends its long-time partner, Carl D. Buchholz III, on his retirement after a 55-year legal career.

Carl began as a summer law clerk, and after graduating from Villanova Law School in 1970, joined Rawle & Henderson LLP as an Associate.

Over his 55 year career Carl excelled in the practice of law, achieving the respect of his clients, peers and colleagues as a skilled and proficient trial and appellate attorney. His practice primarily focused on Maritime law since he began in1970.  He was appointed to chair of the Maritime practice group in 1982, a position that he held until his retirement. Carl has been a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States since 1970.  He achieved the distinction level of Proctor in Admiralty, the highest membership category in that organization.

“It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to practice law with Carl,” said John C. McMeekin II, a member of Rawle & Henderson’s Executive Committee. “His professionalism was admired and respected by his partners and colleagues throughout his years of practice. He will be greatly missed.”

Carl has also been the chair of Rawle & Henderson’s Appellate Practice.  He successfully argued in front of the United States Supreme Court in Howlett v. Birkdale Shipping Company, 512 U.S. 92 (1994), a case that limited longshoremen’s claims against ship owners.  Carl’s state appellate cases include obtaining a unanimous opinion from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejecting the “every breath” theory of causation/liability in asbestos cases in Simikian v. Allied Signal, Inc., 44 A.3d 27 (2012). To date, this case of first impression has not been reversed.

From 2006–2012, Carl served as a member of the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, including a term as Board Chair in 2010 -2011.  Prior to his appointment to the Disciplinary Board, Carl served a six-year term as Chair and Board Member of the Pennsylvania Lawyers Fund for Client Security.

Through the years Carl participated in many aspects of Rawle & Henderson’s growth, serving in leadership positions on the Executive Committee, the Compensation Committee, and as chair of the firm’s Hiring Committee. He has repeatedly been recognized by Thomson Reuters as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer since the program’s inception in 2004.
